   What's New

We’ve added our "What’s New" page to keep you updated on our website, new pet-related resources, local pet news, recall notices, and all sorts of other information that might be of interest to you and helpful to your pets.

November 2007-Help the Animal Service Center win a ONE MILLION DOLLAR Makeover!!!

How you can help- A message from TLCASC volunteer, Jane Cormier:
THANK YOU  to all of you who have registered and participated in the ZooToo contest so far to help the Tallahassee/Leon County Animal Service Center win a makeover worth up to $1,000,000!!!  We currently are in 5th place and have 832 members supporting the shelter!!

If you have not registered, please be assured there is nothing to buy and the only personal information you need to give is your name, DOB and email address.  You will not be put on any product  mailing list unless you choose.  Everyone earns their own points but all of those points actually go into the shelter total and there are no individual prizes.  There are also LOTS of free samples you can obtain to try.

Here are some tips for earning points and PLEASE let me know of any ways to earn points that I have overlooked
There is a cap of so many points per day on some items but others are unlimited.  See the rules on the first page of the website for details.

1)       REGISTER:  If you have not yet joined, you should sign up under someone already registered as that will earn the shelter 200 points (100 for the individual and an extra 100 for the person who referred you-all of which goes to the shelter).  You can ask someone who you know has signed up to refer you or you can go to the shelter’s registration
www.zootoo.com/reg/aff/TallahasseeleonCommunityAnimal.

YOU MUST RESPOND TO THE EMAIL FROM ZOOTOO TO VALIDATE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN ORDER TO EARN POINTS!

If you do not receive this in a timely manner, you spam filter may need to be adjusted.  Once registered, you can invite others although no points are accrued until that person has actually signed up and validated their address.  Please refer to the user agreement for information with regard to inviting others (eg, no spamming, etc.)

Once registered you can:

2)      REVIEW LOCAL PET SERVICES (VETS, STORES) INCLUDING THE SHELTER:    Go to “Pet Services” at the top and choose service you want from the drop down menu.  A review of a pet service will  net you (the shelter) 20 pts.

3)      REVIEW PET PRODUCTS:    You can review a multitude of pet products for 20 pts.  If you are looking for a particular product to review, the easiest way to find it is to click on “Product Review” and type in the product name in “search”.  If it is unavailable, you can go to “add a product” and enter the name and SKU #.

4)
TAKE “ACTION” PHOTOS:   Take pictures of products with your pet(s), write a caption and post for 20 points.

5)
DISCUSS ANIMAL-RELATED ISSUES: Click on “Pet News” to see what topics are up for discussion and earn 8 pts for each topic you discuss.

6)
COMMENT ON OTHER REVIEWS WRITTEN BY SHELTER MEMBERS TO EARN THEM POINTS:  Varying points are awarded to the ORIGINAL REVIEWER when other members make comment on their entries or click “good point” if the review is helpful.  This is easiest if you click on members of our shelter and read their reviews and comments or indicate if their review was helpful.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS INFORMATION TO ANY OTHER ANIMAL LOVERS/SHELTER SUPPORTERS WHO MIGHT WANT TO JOIN!!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT!!!

9/07 Donations Needed for UTOPIA Program
The Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center's UTOPIA Program is in need of leashes and collars for dogs participating in this wonderful obedience training program at the Taylor County Correctional facility. They have requested medium and large nylon collars and  standard 6-foot leashes (no retractable ones). Please contact the Animal Service Center at 891-2950 for more details, or you may drop off your donation at 1125 Easterwood Drive (at Tom Brown Park).

8/07 The UTOPIA Program is Making a Difference!
The Animal Service Center recently held their first graduation ceremony for the dogs that participated in the
Canine UTOPIA Program. Before these pups left for a short stay in the Taylor County Correctional Institution, they were a bunch of canines in need of some basic training. Well, that's just what they got! After completing the 8-week training course, these now well-behaved dogs are ready for a permanent home. Read more about this amazing prison-based dog behavior training program below and find out how you can help:

The Canine UTOPIA program is a partnership between the Animal Service Center and the Taylor Correctional Institution (TCI) in Perry, FL. This unique program began on June 4, 2007 and aims to increase the adoptability of the canines in training.

The Animal Service Center dogs are housed at the TCI for 6 to 8 weeks to receive socialization and basic obedience training. All dogs participating in the UTOPIA Program must complete their training before being adopted (Minimum 6 weeks).

The UTOPIA adoption fee is $150.00. Services included in the adoption fee are: Behavioral assessment, health assessment, rabies vaccine, tag and certificate, other vaccinations appropriate for age, sterilization surgery, AVID microchip, Heartworm testing for dogs 6 months and older and basic obedience training. Caring Neighbors Help Lost Poodle Return Home
Thanks to all the caring pet lovers in our community for helping lost pets find their way home. We recently heard from a local resident who found an elderly poodle wandering through her yard. She contacted us here at TallahasseePetResources.com to post a "Found Pet" ad on our Lost & Found Pets page. She also contacted the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center to file a "Found Pet" report. Luckily, the poodle's owner had filed a "Missing Pet" report with the Animal Service Center and the family was soon reunited with their beloved pet. A happy ending thanks to some great teamwork! Great job guys!

Tails & Trails Event Raises Money for Animals Housed at the Animal Service Center (TLCASC)
The 6th annual Tails & Trails 5k, 10k and 1-mile fun run was held on Saturday, May 5th at Tom Brown Park. With a record-breaking 439 registered participants and a total of almost $30,000 raised to help support animals housed at the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center, the event was a huge success!

Wade Photography was on hand to capture the exciting happenings of race day. If you entered the race and are interested in purchasing prints of your historic finish, please click on the following URL:

Event ID: tailsandtrails

All finisher's photos will be sorted by official race times.  Those results will be posted at

Lions' Sims in Pets Ads
Call Ernie Sims the next Bob Barker. Sims, the Lions' second-year linebacker, is appearing in billboards in his hometown of Tallahassee, Fla., for the nonprofit group, Be The Solution. His message: spay and neuter your pets.

Gerry Phipps, the head of Be The Solution, told the Tallahassee Democrat she reached Sims through veterinarian Lynn Hagood of the North Florida Animal Hospital, where Sims used to work as a technician.

Sims has had all sorts of pets, including birds, turtles, a tarantula and a snake. He has numerous dogs -- a pit bull named Kurupt, Jack Russell terriers named Max, Scrappy and Snoopy, and a German shorthaired pointer named Lilly Mae. He poses with Snoopy and Mae in the ad.

Animal Service Center "Drop Box" Update
The Ad Hoc Committee studying the problem of owner-surrendered animals presented its report to the full Animal Services Advisory Board of the Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Service Center (TLCASC) on Monday evening, May 7, 2007. Included in the report was a strong recommendation that the after-hours kennels remain open. The Board unanimously adopted the recommendations, which will now go to the TLCASC staff for review. John Calhoun, Animal Services Director, stated that the people of Tallahassee had communicated clearly that they valued the after-hours kennels and did not want them closed. Thanks go to those citizens who voiced their opinion through the Leon County Humane Society online survey and through other avenues. The final decision in this matter will rest with the City Commission.

May 12, 2007 Rabies Clinic at Smith-Williams Center
During the 2006 calendar year, three cats tested positive for rabies virus infection in Leon County, Florida. This is an alarming trend as it has been more than 6 years since a domestic animal has tested positive for rabies in our community. These cats were found in the economically disadvantaged areas of Tallahassee where many pets seldom receive veterinary care, let alone a rabies vaccination.  In addition, many humans required treatment following their contact with these cats.

In an effort to help protect our community members and their pets, the City of Tallahassee Animal Control Division, in cooperation with the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (TLCASC), held its first Rabies Vaccination Clinic at the Smith-Williams Neighborhood Center on Saturday, May 12, 2007. This clinic was aimed at providing rabies vaccination to animals in the communities most at need. The Animal Service Center hopes to provide this service to the community again in the future.

April 2007-Welcome to BIRDLAND!
BIRDLAND is an organization that was recently formed to improve the quality of life for parrots and their people by providing education, outreach and other services. Their primary mission is to work with people to keep their birds in their homes if at all possible, or to find new permanent homes for them, if necessary. They provide foster care to help with socialization and assessment of health before exotic birds go to their permanent homes. The group also provides services such as selling bird-safe toys and doing nail and wing trims for a nominal fee. Stop by and meet the group's members and their avian friends at Downtown Marketplace. Dates and other details can be found on our
Events Calendar page. Contact information for the group can be found on our Shelters and Rescue Groups page.

January 2007- Animal Angel Tree Provides hope for Hundreds of Homeless Animals!
(TLCASC Website)

This holiday season hundreds of homeless animals at the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center found their stay a little bit more comfortable. On Friday, Dec.1, the first "Animal Angel Tree" was unveiled to the community at the Animal Service Center on 1125 Easterwood Drive. The tree encouraged pet lovers to play "Santa Paws" and share the holiday spirit of giving by donating various items for homeless animals in need.

The Animal Angel Tree, which was sponsored by Esposito's Garden Center, had been decorated with cards and ornaments providing information about needy dogs, cats and sought after shelter supplies. The Tree remained on display at the Animal Service Center for pet lovers from Dec. 1-26, allowing customers to select an ornament and donate gifts such as pet toys, beds, or a cash donation to fund animal handling supplies and surgical procedures and supplies to aid the 400+ animals in need.

This is the first year that the Shelter has offered a program like this and management would eventually like to expand the program to incorporate other local rescue and animal welfare groups. In total, the Animal Angel Tree raised over $4200.00 in donations during the three week period leading up to the holidays.

Animal Angel Tree DonationsA special thanks to all those in the community who helped to make this a very special Christmas for our furry friends.

December 9, 2006- Santa Paws Walk at Lake Ella

The 11th Annual Santa Paws Walk was held Saturday at Lake Ella. Dogs were dressed in their holiday attire to greet Santa and join him for a walk around the lake. The event raised money for TREATS, Inc., a local non-profit group that supports homeless animals in our area.

Alec's Birthday Party Goes to the Dogs!

A birthday party with no presents for the birthday boy? Why not, if it helps homeless animals! On August 20th, our special pal Alec invited his friends to join him in celebrating both his 8th birthday and the arrival of his new puppy, Ninja. Ninja was adopted from a poodle rescue group in Houston, Texas and is now happily settled with Alec and his family here in Tallahassee. Alec decided on a puppy theme for the party and requested that his friends bring a donation for the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (aka the animal shelter) instead of gifts for him. Two carloads of dog food, treats, toys and other goodies were collected the day of the party and donated to the shelter. What a great idea, Alec!

Clockwise from top left: Alec and friends blowing out the candles, Alec and Ninja in the doghouse, Alec and his new best buddy, and Ninja "guarding" some of the donated items.

August 9, 2006 - Help Big Bend D.A.R.T. Raise Money while Searching the Internet
(
submitted by: Joanie Batten, Big Bend DART)

What if Big Bend D.A.R.T. (Disaster Animal Response Team) earned a penny every time you searched the Internet? Well, now we can!

GoodSearch.com is a new search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it just as you would any search engine, and it’s powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results.

Just go to
www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter
Big Bend D.A.R.T. as the charity you want to support. Just 500 of us searching four times a day will raise about $7300 in a year without anyone spending a dime! And, be sure to spread the word!

Not only did they donate all the paint but they provided the labor and supplies; a value of over $4,000! Thanks also go out to Suzette Crosby for donating her design and space planning services!

IMPORTANT: When you buy paint from Sherwin Williams, the Leon County Humane Society will receive a percentage of the value of your purchase! Visit any Sherwin Williams store (anywhere in the country!!) and give them promotional code # 917149809. Don't delay - redecorate today! Thanks Sherwin Williams!

April 19, 2006 - Website Promotions

We owe thanks to so many people in our community for helping make TallahasseePetResources.com such a big success in our first seven weeks, and for spreading the word about our website:

Troy and Dawne at Magic 107.1 aired an interview about us on their morning show last week. These two are a real blessing to our community! Thanks to both of them for their help.

WCTV did a wonderful job at promoting our website on their news programs last Sunday and Monday. A special thank you to reporter Kate Gaier for doing such a nice job with the interview.

Our "hit count" tripled after these promotional interviews aired!

The Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Services Center (our local animal shelter) and Leon County Humane Society have both been extremely helpful in getting the word out to residents about our new "Lost & Found Pets" page and complimentary lost and found ads by providing space on their front counters for our informational flyers.

And thanks to YOU, our website visitors. We appreciate all the help you’ve given us in letting other pet-lovers in our community know about our site. Thanks, too, for all the pet photos, lost and found ads, comments and other information you have sent our way. We will continue to add articles, tips and resources that are helpful to you and your pets. Keep the comments and suggestions coming!

April 8, 2006 - Our New "Lost & Found Pets" Page

Complimentary lost and found pet ads are now available to Leon County residents who have lost or found a pet. Go to our homepage and click on the "Lost & Found Pets" hyperlink to find directions for posting these ads. We’ve included tips and links to assist you in the search for your missing pet, and some great tips to help prevent your pet from becoming lost.

We need your assistance in letting others in our community know about our "Lost & Found Pets" page and free lost and found pet ads. The more people that view the ads, the better the chance these missing pets have of getting back home where they belong. If you are willing to distribute information about our lost and found ads (work bulletin board, homeowner’s newsletter, friends and neighbors, club members, etc.) please contact us at info@tallahasseepetresources.com for details.

We are currently working with the Animal Services Center, Leon County Humane Society, veterinary clinics and other organizations in our community to get information out about this resource. With all of us working together we can help get these missing pets back home where they belong.
